Those working in different radiation installations are subjected to low level radiations. The people residing in the coastal areas are exposed to low level radiations from mineral sand abundantly available in these areas. The aim of the study is to develop some cost effective sensitive phosphors which could be used for environmental radiation monitoring applications

Abstract of the Work:
|
The rapid decline in potable water in India including Kerala is a serous concern for human health and economic development. Most developed countries globally are now using communities of aquatic insects and other freshwater macro-invertebrates as sentinels for detecting and prioritizing water pollution problems. This technology has proven to be more effective and economical for assessing water quality than traditional chemical analyses alone. A combination of biological and chemical methods along with habitat assessment is needed to characterize water quality fully. The objective of the present proposal is to develop protocols using aquatic insects to monitor water quality in Kerala.

Abstract of the Work:
|
The increased demand for fresh waters and the repeated drought periods occurred during the last few decades in our country lead to the accelerated extraction of ground water resource. Due to over use of ground water for many diverse purposes, resulting in the lowering of ground water level especially in the coastal tracts, leading to intrusion of salt water in to coastal aquifers. Saline water intrusion in to coastal aquifers is a major apprehension all over the world. The study involves formulation of model, and simulation with respect to the field data. This involves field data collection of hydro geologic features of the aquifer, resistivity survey in different regions of area, monitoring of observation of well data and representation of collected data in GIS platform.

|
It is generally believed that rapid population growth and stagnant production are closely related with acute poverty in many developing countries. Rural poor in these countries mainly depends on freely available natural resource for their livelihood and survival; and sometimes these are the only asset they have access to. It is this group that are the most affected by the declining natural resource environment; and the poor pushed by population increase as poverty extent harvesting of natural resource on the fragile area, degrading them. The implementation is that poverty eradication will necessary reduce degradation of the environment, and it’s inverse that arresting and reversing environmental decline will help the poor. The main objective of the proposed study is to understand how depletion of marine fishery resources affect the livelihood security of the coastal fishing community, especially the marginal group and to find out how the poor people responds to the situation.

To establish a comprehensive helpline which can attend to all queries related to tree planting and management like site selection species-site matching , planting, thinning, soil testing fertilization, pest, disease and weed management , multi-species interaction , landscape level afforestation programmes ,tree/wood sample identification ,preservative treatments and economic valuation The clientele of the service will be the general public including students who participate in tree planting programmes like Ente maram and those who participate in initiatives by the Social Forestry wing of Kerala Forest Department and also private and public firms. The project envisages providing a single widow approach to the tree protection needs of the State. It will bank heavily on the expertise at KFRI while also bee in possession of state-of -the art-remedies and techniques developed in and outside country.
