Chirp, chirp...

March 20 is World Sparrow Day. Here’s what you can do

The drop in sparrow population is not restricted to India. It is a global concern — precisely the reason World Sparrow Day (WSD) is observed on March 20. Nature Forever Society (NFS), in association with The Royal Society for Protection of Birds, facilitates a global campaign, called “Rise For The Sparrows”, to raise awareness about sparrows, not just the house sparrow but all the 26 species around the world.

An initiative of the WSD secretariat, it enjoins lovers of the bird to visit worldsparrowday.org — where photos and information about all the species, except for the Kordofan sparrow, are available — to sensitise their communities to the issue, “add photos, stories and ideas to inspire others” on the WSD website. According to the secretariat, “Discussing sparrows on social media websites, writing to newspapers, creating habitats for sparrows, staging a sparrow picnic and providing sparrows with nest boxes and feeding stations” are among ways to help the cause. For more information on the world’s sparrows, visit http://www.save.natureforever.org
