Tiger census operation begins

The Forest Department staff in Pollachi range along with volunteers commenced tiger census operation on Tuesday. According to K. Ganesh Ram, Forest Ranger, a little over 210 men began the operations by walking along 71 transit lines of two km each in 36 beats.

They started the exercise around 6.30 a.m. by looking for tiger movement. They also looked for indirect evidences such as the big cats’ droppings, pug marks or the marks of its claws on tree trunks. They repeated the exercise around 3.30 p.m.

Prior to commencing the exercise, the Department staff trained the volunteers.

The Department had chosen the transit lines in such a way that it covered various forest types in the range.

The men who walked along the lines would also note other animals they spotted. They would not only note the number of animals but also whether it was male or female, their age and other details. They would also record the vegetation. Mr. Ram said in the exercise that would continue till Friday, those engaged in the operation would go on block wise counting where they would confine themselves to the transit lines. They would search the entire area given to them, looking for evidences to establish tigers’ presence.
