Vadavathoor: MoU on waste management to be inked today

Signalling the end of the impasse over the Vadavathoor dumping yard issue, the representatives of Vijayapuram grama panchayat and Kottayam Municipality will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Saturday. The district administration on Friday managed to bring both the parties together for a discussion on the issue. This was after separate meetings were held with both the parties in the presence of Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan and former Supreme Court judge K.T. Thomas.

Details of MoU

As per the MoU, organic waste will not be transported to the dumping yard after December 31, 2013. The existing waste at the plant will be treated by the municipality. It will also ensure that solid wastes are segregated at the source before sending to the yard.

The municipality will make its own arrangements to treat organic wastes after the mutually-agreed deadline. At the same time, a joint facility will be established by the municipality within the dumping yard for processing the inorganic waste generated in both the local bodies.

Monitoring Committee

According to District Collector Ajith Kumar, a committee will also be constituted to monitor and constantly review the progress of the waste management activities of the municipality and at the dumping yard.

The committee will be chaired by the Collector.
