Students become ‘eco doctor,’ test globe

Over 150 students from different educational institutions take part in the International Biodiversity Day celebrations

Cashing in on the craze among the youngsters about uploading their pictures in different poses to the social media networking sites, city-based EGREE Foundation has conducted a novel event on the sidelines of the International Biodiversity Day celebrations here. ‘Eco Doctor’ is the concept designed by Hyderabad-based Babul Film Society, co-sponsor of the programme, in which all the participating students were given doctor’s coat and stethoscope and were asked to test the globe.

The idea is to create awareness among the students about the need for protecting the environment and make them contribute their mite to protect the ecosystem. Students participated in the photo session enthusiastically, following an assurance from the organisers that the photographs would be sent to them immediately after the event, so that they could upload the same on their social networking sites.

Over 150 students from different educational institutions, most of which were engineering colleges, participated in the daylong programme consisting of Nature Walk, slogan writing competition, screening of short films on environment and interaction with the subject experts. As the theme for the year was ‘Island Biodiversity’ the focus of the students was shifted towards the Hope Island and Sacramento Island located in the district and questions were raised about the importance of the islands and how they were protecting the coastal zone from cyclones. DFO (Wildlife) P.V. Ramana Rao and State project coordinator of the UNDP K. Thulasi Rao interacted with the students. Founder of Babul Film Society Gangadhar Pandey and members of the Dharitri Rakshana Samiti were present.
